Clay soil, like in the Plano, Allen, Frisco, and McKinney, TX areas is prone to soil compaction. Soil compaction deprives lawns and other plants of vital nutrients such as water and air. Aeration is a way to open up pores in the soil and allow these nutrients to reach the roots of your lawn.

Aeration can be done in either the spring or fall. It is widely accepted you only need to aerate your yard once a year. Core aeration is the process of mechanically coring out small plugs of soil to allow a path for air and water to flow. Those small cores drilled out of the soil will still benefit the grass. They return nutrients back into the soil as they decompose.

The Core Of Our Aeration Process

Clay soil is common in the Plano, Allen, and Frisco, TX areas. This type of soil is prone to compaction. Core aeration is a process that alleviates compaction in the soil. Soil compaction is a primary cause of an unhealthy lawn. Soil compaction can be caused by a number of things including heavy foot traffic and rain. When your soil becomes compacted, it makes it hard for nutrients, air, and water to reach the roots of your grass.

There are several methods of aeration. Our technicians use core aeration, which is a mechanical process that involves pulling plugs, known as "cores," from your lawn. The resulting holes enable water, air, and nutrients; including fertilizer, to more easily reach the root system. This helps to strengthen the root system, which in turn allows for better plant growth above the surface.

When is the best time of year for core aeration?

Although it is recommended to aerate your yard only once annually, for lawns in the Plano, Texas area, we offer core aeration in both the spring and fall. Many of our customers sign up for our core aeration service in the springtime. That’s because your soil will have better access to essential nutrients and will be able to better absorb fertilizer to begin the growing season, setting your lawn up for success.

Core aeration is beneficial during water restrictions. It maximizes the water uptake of your lawn by reducing water run-off and evaporation.

What should I do after core aeration?

As core aeration is the mechanical removal of small cores from the soil, after core aeration, those small cores remain on the surface of the lawn. These small cores still contain nutrients from the soil. There is no need to remove these cores and they will continue to feed your lawn as they break down and filter back into the soil.

However, if you don’t want these cores on your lawn you have some options. You can either rake them up and dispose of them, or you can break them down with a rake into smaller pieces to expedite their decomposition back into the soil.
